Carson Chan

Carson Chan is an architecture historian and curator, and was recently appointed director of the Emilio Ambasz Institute for the Joint Study of the Built and Natural Environment at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), in New York City. Chan’s current research focuses on the intersection between ecology, environment, justice, and architecture. In 2012, he was co-chief curator of the 4th Marrakech Biennale. The following year, he was executive curator of the Biennial of the Americas in Denver. In 2013, he co-convened a two day conference at Yale School of Architecture about architecture exhibitions called, “Exhibiting Architecture: A Paradox?” In 2006, he co-founded PROGRAM, a project space and residency program in Berlin that aimed to find the disciplinary boundaries of architecture. Chan’s writing has regular appears in art and architecture publications, including Frieze, Texte zur Kunst, Avery Review, Log, Pin-Up, and 032c, where he was formerly editor-at-large. He has contributed to several catalogs and monographs, including those for Monica Bonvicini, Carsten Nikolai, Julien Charrière, and Barkow Leibinger. Recently, Chan was a lecturer at University of Pennsylvania’s Weitzman School of Architecture, where he taught graduate seminars on architecture and ecology.
